Inaugural postage

Welcome to the blog of baby Adelady, Ivanna Shoverova.

I passed Fresh Meat for Adelaide Roller Derby in May of this year during the league's second intake of new skaters. As a new skater, I'm taking things slowly, and have not participated in any public bouts for either of our two teams, the Salty Dolls and the Mile Die Club. I have spent my time working on my basic skills, and as the league penalty tracker.

Unfortunately, roller skating as a pasttime almost died in Australia during the 1990's. The international roller derby revival has brought back roller skating in a big way - the original Adelaide 'Oldies' were joined by about 6 'Mouldies' from the first Fresh Meat intake, and a further 5 'Smellies' from the second Fresh Meat intake. Most players have participated in the three Mile Die Club versus Salty Doll bouts, which served to bring a sport not seen in South Australia back to an appreciative public, and yield a third Fresh Meat intake of 60 skaters per week, which we've maintained for 6 weeks so far!

I'm lucky enough to have been involved as a helper during our last Fresh Meat intake, and I'm absolutely stoked at the interest that roller derby has received in Adelaide. We're also really fortunate to be hosting a one month training visit by Smarty Pants (TXRD) and Cheap Skate (Gotham Girls) next February, which is going to be a massive help for us in learning more skills, and furthering our sport in Adelaide.

I've also got my fingers crossed to make my way to Rollercon next year, but that'll be one step at a time - for now, I'll be content to skate with my league, and post pictures and stories of the antics that we get up to here!
